Notre Dame’s football season is right around the corner, but it appears the Fighting Irish have other problems to worry about.
Five Notre Dame football team members were arrested Friday night on misdemeanor charges after their car was pulled over for speeding in Indiana’s Fulton County.
Police stopped the vehicle for going 73 mph in a 60 mph zone, according an Indiana State Police report. One officer allegedly smelled marijuana and used a police dog to discover illegal narcotics in the car. The officers also found a loaded handgun.
Senior safety Max Redfield, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White, freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson, sophomore running back Dexter Williams and sophomore linebacker Te’von Coney all received a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana.
Redfield, Stepherson and Williams also were charged with possession of a handgun without a license, even though police only found one handgun in the vehicle.
Friday night’s incident wasn’t the only one involving a Notre Dame football player, as senior cornerback Devin Butler was arrested early Saturday morning on preliminary felony charges of battery to law enforcement and resisting law enforcement.
According to South Bend police, Butler was arrested at the Linebacker Lounge, a popular bar located close to the Notre Dame campus.
The school has yet to determine if it will hand out additional discipline to any of the six players recently arrested. The Fighting Irish begin their season Sept. 4 against Texas.
