If the 2016 Major League Baseball season ended at 5:20 p.m. ET on Sunday, the Miami Marlins would be tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the final National League wild-card berth. But the Cardinals clearly now have the upper hand after a devastating injury to Marlins superstar Giancarlo Stanton.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly told reporters Sunday that the right fielder will miss the rest of the season after he injured his left groin trying to stretch a single into a double Saturday night.

“Obviously, you’re disappointed,” Mattingly told reporters, via Marlins.MLB.com. “You lose that out of your lineup. It looks like it’s gonna be for pretty much the rest of the year.

“You’re disappointed, but it’s one of those things that you talk about as a ballclub from spring training forward. Nothing can get in our way. You’ve just gotta move forward.”

Mattingly also told reporters the MRI that Stanton had was serious.

Stanton has dealt with multiple injuries during his seven years in the league, but his talent is undeniable. He had 25 home runs and 70 RBI in 103 games this season.
