By now we’ve all heard about the infamous gas station incident during the Rio Olympics. But while instigator Ryan Lochte rightfully is taking the brunt of the backlash, teammate Jimmy Feigen isn’t off the hook.
The 26-year-old issued his own apology Tuesday, via a statement on his lawyer’s website. Feigen detailed the events at the gas station as he recalled them, admitting that he and his teammates urinated in the grass behind the building and that Lochte pulled a poster off a wall. He also added that a man pointed a gun at the rowdy crew and demanded money, and at that point Feigen was unsure of the man’s affiliation.
Feigen also shared that before he left Brazil to return home, he was ordered to give authorities his passport. In order to get it back, he was given two options: remain in Brazil during the police investigation or pay a fine of $31,250. When Feigen and his lawyers said no to both options, the prosecutor responded by raising the fine to $46,875.
Feigen eventually paid a fine of $10,800 and was allowed to return to the U.S. We bet he’ll rethink his bathroom breaks for some time to come.
