FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots’ first joint practice with the New Orleans Saints has started off on a sour note.

Defensive end Rob Ninkovich and wide receiver Julian Edelman both left Tuesday’s practice early with apparent injuries. Ninkovich exited the field with a team doctor early in practice. Then Edelman slammed his helmet on the ground and had his lower left leg looked at by Patriots head trainer Jim Whelan on the sideline before slowly walking off the field.

Edelman broke his left foot last season and has had two surgeries to attempt to fix the injury. He returned from the physically unable to perform list in his first practice Sunday.
