FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots and their fans are breathing a sigh of relief after a scary situation unfolded Tuesday at joint practice with the New Orleans Saints.
Julian Edelman threw his helmet down and limped off the field after 1-on-1 drills, but various reports indicate the Patriots wide receiver’s injury isn’t serious.
The Patriots’ offense struggled last season after Edelman broke his foot, but his play on the field wouldn’t be the only aspect missed by New England if he again was forced out of action.
“He’s got the defense swagger, but he plays offense,” Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler said Tuesday.
Edelman actually played cornerback for the Patriots in 2011 when they became dangerously shallow at the position. He also has taken it upon himself to help the Patriots’ new wideouts.
“Julian brings a lot of energy,” Pats receiver Chris Hogan said. “He’s been around for a while. He’s the veteran guy in that room, and he’s the leader of our group, really. When he’s on the field, he brings a lot of energy, and that energy is contagious. It’s nice having him out there, for sure.”
The energy Edelman brings to the field was evident Monday, when he caught an end zone fade over Patriots cornerback Justin Coleman and then spiked the ball, eliciting a big cheer from the crowd. The Patriots’ offense struggled Tuesday against the Saints after Edelman suffered his injury.
