San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick finds himself at the center of attention in the NFL for his refusal to stand during the national anthem.

He might not have too many more opportunities — at least with the 49ers — to be on the sidelines for the anthem, though.

FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer said during FOX’s preseason coverage Sunday that Kaepernick might not be a member of the 49ers organization beyond this season.

“Regardless of politics or not, he has a very, very big uphill battle to make this team,” Glazer said. “I’d be shocked if he’s on the 49ers by the time this season ends. It has nothing to do with political views whatsoever.

“He lost a ton of weight this offseason, had three surgeries, couldn’t work out, lost that double threat, that size-speed ratio. No political views, he just hasn’t been effective. He’s regressing as a player. I’d be shocked if he’s on this roster by the end of this year. He may not be on it in the next two weeks.”

Kaepernick has been competing for San Francisco’s starting quarterback job with Blaine Gabbert during the preseason.

So far, Gabbert appears to have the upper hand, especially when you factor in last season’s performance when both players played in eight games. Gabbert outplayed Kapernick during that stretch. Kaepernick made his preseason debut Friday against the Green Bay Packers and completed just two of six pass attempts for 14 yards.

Quite frankly, if you can’t beat out a below-average player like Gabbert for the starting QB job, you’re probably not worth keeping on the roster.
