The New England Patriots’ 90-man roster is down to just 88 players.

The Patriots informed safety Cedric Thompson of his release, his agent, David Canter, tweeted Sunday. Thompson is the second safety the Patriots have waived this week. They waived Brock Vereen on Tuesday. Vereen was claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs. Canter expects Thompson, a 2015 fifth-round pick by the Miami Dolphins, to also be claimed.

The Patriots are down to just six safeties: starters Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung, backups Duron Harmon and Jordan Richards, special-teamer Nate Ebner and 2016 free-agent signee Vinnie Sunseri. They carried nine safeties at one point during the 2015 season when they had just a 53-man roster.

The Patriots must trim their roster to 75 players by Aug. 30. Their 53-man cutdown date is Sept. 3.
