The New England Patriots already have trimmed their 90-man roster down to 87 players.

The Patriots released tight end Bear Pascoe on Monday, a source told NESN.com. The news was first reported by Chris Price of WEEI.com.

Pascoe signed with the Patriots on July 27 — the day before training camp began. The tight end was buried on the Patriots’ depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, A.J. Derby and Clay Harbor. He was competing for preseason snaps with undrafted rookie Steven Scheu.

The Patriots must whittle their roster down to 75 players by Aug. 30.
