Fans at Tuesday night’s Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees game at Fenway Park will have to wait to receive their David Ortiz bobbleheads because of a pretty bad manufacturing error.
The Red Sox canceled Big Papi’s bobblehead night hours before Tuesday’s 7:10 p.m. game after the figurines didn’t look how the team expected them to. Red Sox president Sam Kennedy told MassLive.com’s Jen McCaffrey over the phone that the 15,000 bobbleheads were “racially insensitive.”
“I had a chance to review the bobbleheads for the first time this afternoon when they arrived,” Kennedy said. “I felt they were an inaccurate portrayal of David, and I personally felt there were offensive facial features that were racially insensitive. I figured if I felt that way and my colleagues did, others would, too, so we made the decision to redo them. We’ll have a revised and appropriate version made, and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience to fans.”
Fans entering Fenway received a card with instructions on how to receive a bobblehead once they’re remade. And looking at the photo of the bobbleheads, it’s obvious the Red Sox made the right decision.
