Red Sox Wrap: Offense Explodes In Rain-Shortened 8-1 Win Over Orioles

The Boston Red Sox got some help from their offense and Mother Nature on Wednesday to complete a two-game sweep in Baltimore.

The Red Sox scored eight runs against the Orioles through six complete innings before torrential rains hit Camden Yards. The rain delay started at 9:20 ET and lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes before the umpires finally called the game, sending Boston off with an 8-1 win, the team’s sixth victory in a row.

Here’s how this rain-shortened affair went down:

GAME IN A WORD
Outburst.

That word applies to both the weather, which cut this game short, and the Red Sox’s offense, which exploded for eight runs and 13 hits in just six innings.

IT WAS OVER WHEN…
The skies opened up.

The Red Sox and Orioles needed five innings to make it an official game, and they made it through six with Boston leading 8-1 before a wave of thunderstorms rolled through the Baltimore area.

ON THE BUMP
— David Price kept the Orioles’ bats quiet throughout a strong outing — with one exception.

The left-hander scattered four hits over six innings in his brief appearance, but one of those was a monster home run to Baltimore’s Chris Davis that left Camden Yards entirely.

That would be Price’s only big mistake, however, as he struck out four Orioles batters and walked no one to pick up his second consecutive win and improve to 11-8 on the season.

IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— Travis Shaw started the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single that plated Jackie Bradley Jr.

— Bradley belted a two-run homer to dead center field in the third — his 20th of the season — to put Boston up 3-0.

— Sandy Leon continued the onslaught in the fifth with a mammoth two-run blast to right field. Leon tallied another hit in the third and finished 2-for-4.

— David Ortiz got in on the fun one inning later, drilling a double to the gap that scored Xander Bogaerts from first for his 93rd RBI of the season.

— Bradley then continued his huge night by ripping a two-RBI double that extended the Red Sox’s lead to 8-1. The 26-year-old was the star of Boston’s offensive outbreak, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs.

— Mookie Betts didn’t hit a million home runs, but he did tally two hits in three at-bats, score a team-high three runs and record his 19th stolen base of the season in the fifth.

— Brock Holt quietly had himself a 3-for-3 night from the No. 7 hole. No. 9 hitter Andrew Benintendi (0-for-2) was the only Red Sox player without a hit.

— Dustin Pedroia celebrated his 33rd birthday with a hit in the third inning but finished just 1-for-4 and also committed an error at second base.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT
It rained a lot at Camden Yards, folks.

UP NEXT
The Red Sox’s road trip will continue in Detroit with a crucial four-game series against the Tigers. Clay Buchholz is pegged to start Thursday’s series opener, which is set to start at 1:10 p.m. ET in a very quick turnaround for Boston.
