It’s about to be the end of an era in New York.
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is expected to announce on Friday his plan to retire following the 2016 season, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported. The 36-year-old is finishing his 14th season in Major League Baseball and his eighth with the Yankees.
Teixeira has enjoyed a prolific career, and it could have been even better had his last few seasons not been riddled with injuries. From 2012 on, he’s missed at least 29 games — sometimes many more — each season.
Teixeira has a disappointing .138/.287/.340 slash line this season and already has missed 31 games with a knee injury. However, his career numbers are pretty darn solid considering all the time he’s missed. Teixeira has 404 career home runs, 1,281 RBIs and 1,836 hits, good for averages of 36, 114 and 163 per season, respectively. The first baseman also has five Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger Awards and is a three-time All-Star and a World Series champion.
