FOXBORO, Mass. — Friday’s scrimmage mostly was a serious affair for the New England Patriots, but head coach Bill Belichick wasn’t afraid to throw some fun into the mix.

Like the time Rob Gronkowski threw an interception to safety Devin McCourty during a failed trick play.

“When I see him, I’m pretty sure he’s going to let me know that he picked it off,” Gronkowski said laughing after practice. “It was one of the best punts out there. Right on the 1-yard line. That’s how I’m looking at it.”

McCourty was critical of Gronkowski’s game managing skills as a passer.

“It was a deep one, but probably not the best decision to throw into double coverage right there,” McCourty said. “But you take the ball out of the quarterback’s hand, you never know what you’re going to get.”

Gronkowski shouldn’t feel too bad. It was McCourty’s third interception of training camp.
