Tim Tebow’s football dream appears to be over, so he’s apparently going to give another sport a try.
The former (or maybe just currently unemployed?) NFL quarterback is pursuing a career in baseball, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday. According to Schefter, the former Denver Broncos first-round pick will hold an open tryout for all 30 major league teams at the end of the month.
Schefter also reported that Tebow has spent the last year working on his baseball game. The 28-year-old, however, hasn’t played competitive baseball since his senior year of high school. He was a standout baseball player in high school, but that must be taken with a grain of salt, because, you know, it was high school baseball. The left-handed throwing Tebow plans to try out as an outfielder, where one wonders whether his questionable arm strength will also be an issue on the diamond.
In all seriousness, Tebow’s baseball ambitions aren’t totally unwarranted. Former Los Angeles Angels scout Tom Kotchman told WEEI.com in 2013 that the Angels came close to drafting Tebow when the former Florida quarterback was coming out of high school. Tebow also made some noise on the baseball field shortly after the Broncos drafted him in 2010, when he took batting practice at a Memphis high school and hit home runs on 12 of 15 pitches … for whatever that’s worth.
Tebow hasn’t appeared in an NFL regular-season game since 2012, when he played in 12 games and made two starts with the New York Jets, completing six of eight passes for 39 yards and rushing 32 times for 102 yards. Tebow, who most recently had preseason stints with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, has just a 75.3 career passer rating.
