To the surprise of no one, Colin Kaepernick once again chose not to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who has been mired in controversy for over a week thanks to his stance against the national anthem, took a knee Thursday alongside teammate Eric Reid while the anthem played.

Kaepernick received scattered boos when he took a knee before getting a rousing storm of them when he took the field for San Francisco’s first drive of the game, according to The Associated Press. He promptly led the Niners on a 16-play, 85-yard touchdown drive.

The game took place in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers are hosting their annual Salute to the Military preseason game. There is an extensive armed forces community in the San Diego area.
