Believe it or not, Jacoby Brissett already has written his name into the New England Patriots record books. He could add another line Thursday night.

Brissett, a rookie third-round pick out of North Carolina State, entered Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins as the Patriots’ backup quarterback behind Jimmy Garoppolo while Tom Brady sits out his four-game suspension. But when Garoppolo left the game in the second quarter with an injury to his throwing shoulder, Brissett entered and took 38 snaps over two-plus quarters to close out New England’s 31-24 victory at Gillette Stadium.

In those snaps, Brissett completed 6 of 9 passes for 92 yards. Those 92 yards set a Patriots record for most career passing yards by a black quarterback in team history, according to Deadspin.

In fact, Brissett is just the sixth black quarterback ever to be a part of the Patriots organization, per Deadspin. And if he starts Thursday night against the Houston Texans — which still isn’t a sure thing — he’d be the first black quarterback ever to get the starting nod for New England.
