Jay Cutler Injury: Bears QB Not Expected To Need Surgery On Thumb

Jay Cutler is considered day to day, according to Chicago Bears head coach John Fox.

Fox told reporters Tuesday that Cutler suffered a right thumb sprain in Monday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier Tuesday, citing a source, that the Bears were preparing for a lengthy absence for the veteran quarterback, but Fox said it doesn’t appear Cutler will require surgery on his thumb. Cutler’s status for Week 3 is up in the air.

Brian Hoyer replaced Cutler in the third quarter Monday and went 9 of 12 for 78 yards. Cutler had gone 12 of 17 for 157 yards with one interception before exiting the contest.

This isn’t the first time the Bears have dealt with issues surrounding Cutler, who’s in the midst of his eighth season with the organization. The 33-year-old’s toughness has been questioned in the past, and this latest ailment certainly won’t help him in the court of public opinion regardless of its severity.
