The incredibly sad news of Jose Fernandez’s death somehow just got even sadder.

The Miami Marlins pitcher, one of the brightest young stars in Major League Baseball, was killed early Sunday morning in a boating accident off the coast of Miami Beach. Needless to say, news of Fernandez’s death rocked the baseball community and those who knew the 24-year-old Cuba native.

But his demise was made even more tragic by one of his most recent posts on Instagram. Just five days ago, Fernandez posted a touching photo of his girlfriend, Carla Mendoza, that revealed the couple was expecting a child.

Fernandez’s death already is terrible enough as it is, but this makes it all the more heart-wrenching.

The Marlins canceled their game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday in the wake of the tragic news.
