There’s a strong possibility Kevin Garnett has played his final NBA game.
KG and the Minnesota Timberwolves are in “advanced discussions on a buyout,” league sources told ESPN’s Marc Stein on Wednesday night. Garnett has one year and $8 million remaining on his contract.
So what does this mean for the 15-time All-Star? Well, he could call it a career after 21 seasons in the NBA, as Stein’s sources said the Timberwolves believe he’ll do, or he could try to find a new home for the 2016-17 season if he feels he can play.
This news comes shortly after Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau told the Star Tribune about discussions between KG and team owner Glen Taylor.
“Glen and Kevin and his representatives are in discussions,” Thibodeau said. “We’ll keep that private for now, and we’ll see how it unfolds. But, obviously, what Kevin has meant to our league, the organization, he’s earned the right to have those discussions with Glen.”
Injuries limited Garnett, 40, to 43 games with the Timbervolves since they acquired him in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets in February 2015. KG, who originally was drafted by the T-Wolves with the No. 5 pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, also has played for the Boston Celtics and Nets.
