Boston Red Sox fans will feel David Ortiz’s presence at Fenway Park long after his retirement.
Massachusetts lawmakers announced Thursday in a statement they’ve taken steps to name a bridge near Fenway Park after the retiring Boston Red Sox slugger, The Boston Globe reported. The honor was included in a supplemental budget bill and is likely to have enough support to easily pass.
Renaming the bridge is an attempt to honor Ortiz’s ‘athletic accomplishment during 14 seasons as a member of the Boston Red Sox, and his personal contributions to the Commonwealth, notably, his charitable commitment to children in New England and the Dominican Republic,” according to the Globe.
The bridge will feature a new marker reflecting its new name.
The bridge, which carries Brookline Avenue over the Mass. turnpike, is familiar to most Red Sox fans as a walkway to Fenway Park. Soon they’ll call it the “David Ortiz (Big Papi) Bridge.”
The bridge honor is only one of many fitting ways to thank Ortiz for over a decade of thrills.
