MLB Postseason Picture: Red Sox Would Play Indians If Season Ended Tuesday

The Boston Red Sox could have clinched the American League East on Tuesday night in the Bronx, but the New York Yankees continued to play spoiler.

One night after New York came from behind to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays and cut Boston’s magic number to clinch the AL East to only one, the Yankees struck again with three home runs off Red Sox ace David Price to take home a 6-4 victory. That, combined with Toronto’s win over the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers’ victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, means no champagne was popped in the Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston now trails Texas by one game for the best record in the AL. The Red Sox still sit one win or one Blue Jays loss away from clinching the division, though, and actually have clinched at least a tie atop the AL East.

By virtue of Boston’s loss, its playoff matchup now has changed (as it likely will multiple times over the remainder of the week). Here’s an updated look at the MLB playoff picture, via MLB.com.
