The Chicago White Sox’s offseason to-do list will include figuring out what to do with Chris Sale.
The White Sox will listen to trade offers involving Sale, according to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. This doesn’t mean Chicago ultimately will deal the left-hander, though, as the asking price figures to be extremely high.
“The odds of getting what we feel we need to get are slim,” a team source told Cafardo. “That’s why I think Chris will be with us in 2017.”
Sale is Chicago’s best pitcher and one of the best hurlers in Major League Baseball, but the White Sox are in the midst of another disappointing season and trading the five-time All-Star seemingly would present the organization with an opportunity to land several assets that could help in its quest to rebuild.
The White Sox also have had some issues with Sale this season. He first kicked up a fuss in March after White Sox executive vice president Kenny Williams told Adam LaRoche to scale back on the amount of time the slugger’s son spent around the team, prompting LaRoche to retire. And he was suspended for five games by the White Sox in July after cutting up throwback jerseys the team was planning to wear on a day he was supposed to start.
Sale finished in the top six in American League Cy Young voting each of the last four seasons and is having another superb year even as Chicago continues to struggle in the AL Central.
