Even if the San Francisco 49ers think Colin Kaepernick is a distraction, the fact is he might be their best quarterback, and talent at that position is vital to achieve any kind of success in today’s NFL.

The latest report from NFL Media suggests he’ll survive the 49ers’ final roster cut to 53 players. The league-wide deadline for that roster is 4 p.m. ET Saturday.

Kaepernick’s decision to sit for the Star-Spangled Banner out of protest and in support of “people that are being oppressed,” which resumed in Thursday’s preseason finale against the San Diego Chargers, has been the most talked about story in the sports world over the last week.

To his credit, though, he was pretty good Thursday night. Kaepernick completed 11 of 18 passes for 103 yards with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also ran for 38 yards on four carries, which included one run of 20 yards.

Blaine Gabbert, the presumed starting quarterback for the 49ers entering their Week 1 matchup with the against the Los Angeles Rams, didn’t play in Thursday’s contest.

Kaepernick clearly is one of the two best quarterbacks on the San Francisco roster, whether it’s as a starter or a backup. That probably will be good enough to remain on the 49ers’ roster for the time being.
