Phil Kessel put on his sassy pants Tuesday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins forward was at home, just hanging out, instead of helping Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey. The speedy goal scorer was left off the roster, and in hindsight, that might have been a positive for Kessel.
The Americans were upended in surprising fashion by Europe in the opener, and they were playing for their tournament lives against Canada on Tuesday, needing a regulation win to have any hopes of advancing. But Canada promptly steamrolled the USA, winning 4-2 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score might indicate.
Enter Kessel. The former Olympian chimed in with this heavy dosage of shade shortly after the Americans were effectively eliminated.
Kessel wasn’t included in the first or second round of World Cup tryout invites from USA Hockey before undergoing hand surgery after the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.
Kessel did make the 2014 Olympic team, and all he did there was score five goals and add three assists in just six games. He also was part of the silver medal-winning team in 2012, and he has 36-36-72 totals in just 59 games in international action dating to his time playing for Team USA in the world junior championships.
