It had to end at some point.
The seemingly invincible Boston Red Sox finally became vincible Tuesday night, falling 6-4 to the New York Yankees in the Bronx to bring their season-long 11-game winning streak to an end.
David Price got roughed up to take his first loss in 10 starts, squandering a comeback attempt by Boston’s offense with an opportunity to clinch the American League East on the line.
Here’s how this one went down.

The Red Sox had to keep their champagne in the cooler, as their loss coupled with the Toronto Blue Jays’ win over the Baltimore Orioles denied them a chance to wrap up first place in the AL East.
IT WAS OVER WHEN…
David Ortiz couldn’t come up clutch in the ninth inning
Big Papi has victimized the Yankees plenty of times, but Tuesday wasn’t one of them, as he struck out with two outs and runners on first and second to allow New York to escape with the win.
ON THE BUMP
— Price likely is glad he won’t have to face the Yankees again this season.
New York got to the left-hander yet again, touching him for six runs on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings. Three of those hits were home runs, as Price allowed a two-run homer to Gary Sanchez in the first, a solo shot to Didi Gregorious in the sixth and a backbreaking two-run jack to Tyler Austin in the seventh that broke a 4-4 tie.
Price walked one and struck out two, suffering his first loss since Aug. 7. He has allowed 29 home runs in 34 appearances this season and now is 1-3 with a 7.89 ERA in five starts against the Yankees in 2016.
— Brad Ziegler relieved Price with one out in the seventh and induced an inning-ending double play to Sanchez. He retired one batter in the eighth before being replaced by Robbie Ross Jr.
— Ross allowed two baserunners on a hit and an error but was able to set down the next two batters to escape an eighth-inning jam.
IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— Dustin Pedroia made a Yankees error hurt in the sixth inning, bringing home Andrew Benintendi on an RBI single after the rookie left fielder made it to second base on a wild throw to first by New York pitcher Luis Cessa.
— Mookie Betts hit an RBI ground-out later in the frame that scored Pedroia, giving him 110 RBIs on the season.
— Pedroia delivered again one inning later with a two-out, RBI single that plated Jackie Bradley Jr. to tie the score at 4-4. The Red Sox second baseman finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
— Benintendi added a double in the ninth to finish 2-for-4 with a run scored.
— Aaron Hill stepped up in the seventh, leading off the inning with his 10th homer of the season while pinch hitting for Brock Holt.
— Xander Bogaerts had a stellar night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double. He did make an error at shortstop, however.
— It was a different story for Ortiz, who went 0-for-5 and stranded seven runners on base.
