David Ortiz has an abundance of memorable home runs in a Boston Red Sox uniform, and more could come before the end of this season, his last in Major League Baseball.
But Wednesday marks the 10-year anniversary of one of his most historic homers.
On Sept. 21, 2006, Ortiz belted his 51st homer of the season. The blast off Minnesota Twins starter Johan Santana broke a tie with Jimmie Foxx, giving Ortiz sole position of the Red Sox’s single-season home run record.
Ortiz went on to finish the season with 54 homers.
That number still stands as both the record and Ortiz’s personal best. Ortiz’s second-highest number for homers in a season is 47, a mark he set in 2005. The most homers he has hit in any year since 2006 was 37 last season, though he could surpass that number this year, as he sits at 36 homers with 11 games to go.
