EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Tom Brady has expressed his disappointment over his four-game suspension, but he proved he still has a sense of humor over his scrambling ability Thursday night.
Brady, 39, took off on a 10-yard scramble as the Patriots faced second and 9 late in the first quarter of their 17-9 preseason finale loss to the New York Giants. The run helped extend the drive, and the Patriots scored their lone touchdown three plays later on a 7-yard completion to Keshawn Martin.
Brady knows his limits when he starts to run with the football.
“The scramble — they kind of covered everybody and hopefully I can make a few of those plays,” Brady said smiling. “At least I want to be a little bit of a threat out there. I know I’m never going to be like Russell Wilson, but if I can make one or two of those a game, I think that helps us out a bit.”
Brady isn’t quite as mobile as Wilson, the 27-year-old Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback, or even his backups Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett, but he proved Thursday that he can still be a threat with his legs when he picks his spots.
Brady received an unexpected start in the Patriots’ final preseason game and went 16 of 26 for 166 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also added 9 yards on two carries.
