The Boston Red Sox are the 2016 American League East champions. Let that sink in for a moment.

Yes, we’ve known that since Wednesday when an odd set of circumstances led to the Red Sox clinching the division, but it still must feel pretty sweet for the team as it returns to Fenway Park for one last regular-season series before starting the postseason.

“Well, it was a great accomplishment,” chairman Tom Werner told NESN’s Tom Caron on “Red Sox Gameday Live” before Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. “As we’ve said all year, this has been a very competitive division. I think it’s the best division in baseball. We had a terrific season and an 11-game winning streak before we got to New York.

“I think we all were sitting there and it was a bit of a weird moment because we wanted to see the players jump on each other. But the fact of the matter is this is an outstanding team, and we deserve to win the division because we played baseball terrific all year.”
