Tony Romo Injury: Could Cowboys QB Return Sooner Than Anticipated?

Tony Romo missed the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener Sunday, a game they lost 20-19 to NFC East division rivals the New York Giants at home.

Losing without Romo certainly wasn’t a surprise. After all, the Cowboys have only one win in the last 15 games that their No. 1 quarterback hasn’t started.

Hope could be on the horizon for Cowboys fans, though.

“Everything is fine, not fine, but is on go,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently said about Romo’s status, per Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram. “(The X-rays showed) nothing that would in any way get in the area of a setback or would show concern.”

Jones later added Romo “expects to be back sooner rather than later.”

Despite the Cowboys’ horrible record without Romo, they really shouldn’t rush his return to game action from a back injury suffered in the preseason. They obviously don’t want him to be less than 100 percent when he returns because that will increase the risk of reinjuring his back.

But more importantly, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott played pretty well in his debut Sunday. He probably would’ve earned his first win if drops and mental mistakes — like wide receiver Terrance Williams not going out of bounds on the game’s final play — didn’t happen.

It’s also worth noting that Dallas’ upcoming schedule, which consists of road matchups with the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers, as well as a home game against the Chicago Bears, doesn’t pose too many challenges.
