Robert Morin made his mark on the University of New Hampshire primarily as a librarian, but many outside academia will remember him for the impact he’ll have on football games.
Morin left UNH a $4 million gift last year upon his death at age 77. He specified that $100,000 go directly to Dimond Library, where he worked as a cataloguer many years, and gave UNH discretion to use the rest as it sees fit, according to The Washington Post’s Sarah Larimer.
University administrators announced earlier this month that they’ll spend $1 million (or 25 percent) of Morin’s gift to pay for the video scoreboard at the new Wildcat Stadium. The 11,015-seat venue cost $26 million and hosted its first game Saturday.
UNH hopes residents from across the state will have the chance to marvel at the facility and its shiny new scoreboard, with Wildcat Stadium expected to host high school football championships, special Olympics and perhaps concerts, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader’s Kimberley Haas.
UNH also will use $2.5 million to expand its career center.
