Arnold Palmer died Sunday at the age of 87.

He was one of the most iconic sports figures of his time, and reigned ever as popular until his death. But beyond the popularity, the seven-time major champion also is one of the best golfers ever to play the game.

In 2015, the “Big Three” of Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit the ceremonial tee shots as Honorary Starters to begin the Masters. It was the last time Palmer was able to do so, as his fading health prohibited the then-86-year-old from participating this year.

Palmer won four Masters titles in seven years between 1958 and 1964. Though he was unable to hit in 2016, he still was out at the tee wearing his green jacket, smiling and waving to fans.

“I think he was delighted to be out there,” Nicklaus said in April, via The Associated Press. “I think we were delighted to have him there. I think Gary and I felt it was more about Arnold this morning than anything else, and I think that was just fine.”
