UPDATE (10:51 p.m. ET): The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t have their starting quarterback when they host the New England Patriots next Sunday.
Ben Roethlisberger will undergo surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus, Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday night.
Backup Landry Jones is expected to start against the 5-1 Patriots, per Cook.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Pittsburgh Steelers lost 30-15 to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, and they might have lost their starting quarterback, too.
Ben Roethlisberger needs an MRI after he injured his left knee during the second quarter of Sunday’s game in Miami, NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala reported. Backup quarterback Landry Jones replaced Roethlisberger in the second quarter, but Roethlisberger returned and played the entire second half.
Big Ben sustained the injury after Dolphins defensive end Jordan Phillips caught the back of the signal-caller’s foot on an interception. The Steelers team doctor’s initial evaluation was that Roesthlisberger hyperextended the knee, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.
If Roethlisberger’s injury is serious, Pittsburgh will have to go on without him against the New England Patriots in Week 7. Jones was the only other active Steelers QB on Sunday, but Zach Mettenberger also is on the roster.
Roethlisberger has 1,496 yards, 15 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 106.6 passer rating on the season so far.
