Hats off to the San Diego Chargers. They keep finding new ways to lose games.
The Chargers blew another second-half lead Sunday en route to a 34-31 loss to the Oakland Raiders. San Diego had a chance to tie the game as the clock ticked down to the 2-minute warning, but a botched 35-yard field-goal attempt crushed those dreams.
Philip Rivers threw a touchdown pass with 6:21 left in the fourth quarter to pull the Chargers within three points. San Diego’s defense then came up with a stop on Oakland’s ensuing drive, giving the Bolts another chance to seize control.
The Chargers couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity, though. Chargers head coach Mike McCoy opted for a field-goal attempt rather than going for a first down on 4th-and-1 inside the Raiders’ 20-yard line, and Drew Kaser mishandled a good snap. The Raiders took over on downs and killed most of the remaining clock to improve their record to 4-1. The Chargers fell to 1-4.
It’s been a gut-wrenching start to the season for the Chargers, as San Diego’s four losses have come by a total of 14 points.
