Where were you when the Indianapolis Colts attempted one of the worst plays in the history of football?
On Oct. 18, 2015, the Colts and the New England Patriots met in Indianapolis in Week 6 for a rematch of the 2014 AFC Championship game, which is where the Deflategate saga began. And the 3-2 Colts, who hadn’t played the toughest schedule to that point, were keeping up with the 4-0 Patriots through most of the first three quarters.
Or they were, until they tried this monstrosity of a fake punt.
By sending out wide receiver Griff Whalen at center for safety Colt Anderson, the Colts were trying to prompt the Patriots to swap their special teamers for their defense before snapping the ball and catching New England with too many men on the field. And when the Pats didn’t budge, Whalen and Anderson should have waited and taken the delay of game penalty so the Colts could execute a real punt. But apparently Whalen didn’t receive the memo and handed the ball off to Anderson, whom three Patriots immediately clobbered, and Indy got an illegal formation penalty.
The Colts took a 34-27 loss and likely will never live that play down. But the rest of us can enjoy it for years to come. Let’s watch it again.
