Dak Prescott is making Jerry Jones’ decision on who to start at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys awfully difficult.
The rookie threw three touchdowns and had his fifth consecutive game with a passer rating of at least 100 as the first-place Cowboys improved to 5-1 with a 20-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Lambeau Field. Following the win, the always-flamboyant Jones was mum on who would be the starting quarterback when Tony Romo returns from injury in a few weeks.
“What we’re gonna do is wait (until) the next card’s played,” Jones said, per Scout.com.
So what does Prescott’s terrific play mean?
“I wouldn’t say unequivocally anything — other than we just beat the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay,” Jones snidely added.
Jones’ statements are much different than the ones he made last week when he declared Romo the team’s No. 1 quarterback.
And why wouldn’t he have a slight change of heart?
In Prescott’s young career, he already has broken a record held by Tom Brady (most consecutive pass attempts to start a career without an interception) and he’s won a game at Lambeau Field — something Tony Romo hasn’t been able to accomplish.
He’s also completed over 70 percent of his passes since Week 2 and he has the lowest interception percentage in the league this season.
But it’s hard to simply shove Romo aside. He has the third-highest passer rating in NFL history and the Cowboys are 16-4 in his last 20 starts (playoffs included). There’s also something scary about having to start a rookie in a playoff game.
Either way, this is a good problem for Dallas to have. It’s certainly a lot better than the quarterback controversy they had last year featuring Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden and Kellen Moore.
