Donald Trump is one of the most polarizing presidential candidates in recent memory, and his campaign has sparked plenty of debate among living rooms, classrooms and even on the gridiron.
In a new piece for B/R Mag, Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman spoke to several NFL players about Trump, including a few Bills players who were less than thrilled with Buffalo head coach Rex Ryan supporting the Republican nominee and speaking at one of his events.
“Rex is such an open-minded guy, a really good person,” an anonymous African-American Bills player told Freeman. “But the fact he could back someone as closed-minded as Trump genuinely shocked me.
“Some of the African-American players on the team weren’t happy about Rex doing that.”
A different Bills player said, “I see Trump as someone who is hostile to people of color, and the fact that Rex supports him made me look at him completely differently, and not in a positive way.”
Not too many superstar athletes across sports have endorsed either Trump or Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
However, NBA superstars Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers both have voiced their support for Clinton over the last month. James recently wrote an op-ed for Business Insider detailing why he endorsed Clinton.
In one part of his column, James wrote “we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified. Policies and ideas that divide us more are not the solution. We must all stand together — no matter where we are from or the color of our skin. And Hillary is running on the message of hope and unity that we need.”
Many of the notable athletes and sports figures who have endorsed Trump are retired.
