ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — It was a great day to be Rob Gronkowski in his annual homecoming at New Era Field.

There was a perfect mix of dominance on the field for the Patriots tight end and sophomoric humor for good measure in New England’s 41-25 shellacking of the Buffalo Bills. Gronkowski set the Patriots’ franchise record with his 69th touchdown on a 53-yard bomb from quarterback Tom Brady. He caught five passes for 109 yards to go along with the score.

“I want to give a shoutout to my mom too,” Gronkowski said Sunday after the win. “The first thing yesterday, as soon as we sat down, I saw her, she came to my hotel with everyone, we sat down and she goes, ‘Rob I’m so proud of you when you score your 69th touchdown.’ So I was like, ‘I’ve got to give her a shoutout for sure for letting me know that she’s super proud of me, so ‘Hi, Mom!”

There also was a, uh, sex toy thrown on the field by someone in the crowd late in the third quarter.

“I think that was for the Bills,” Gronkowski quipped.

When Gronkowski, who hails from nearby Williamsville, N.Y., left the news conference podium, he went back onto the field to meet with family members who watched his record-settling performance.
