Boston Bruins defenseman and captain Zdeno Chara rarely fights at this stage of his career. He’s simply too important to the team’s success to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

But it didn’t take him long to register his first bout of the 2016-17 NHL season. Chara dropped the gloves with Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Matt Martin in the third period of Saturday night’s game at Air Canada Centre.

Martin laid a hard hit on Bruins defenseman Torey Krug moments before Chara stepped onto the ice, and the B’s captain didn’t like it.

The Bruins lost 4-1, dropping their record to 1-1-0.
