FOXBORO, Mass. — As one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history, Bill Belichick always has football on the brain. He made that crystal clear in his final news conference before one of the biggest football days of the year, Thanksgiving.
Asked Wednesday whether he plans to watch any of the three NFL games taking place on the Thursday holiday, the New England Patriots coach said he’ll certainly tune into the Detroit Lions-Minnesota Vikings matchup, as Lions general manager Bob Quinn is a former Patriots executive.
Then came a Freudian slip as Belichick wished the assembled reporters a Happy Thanksgiving.
“Football’s a great holiday,” Belichick said. “It’s about family, friends, good food and football. How can it get any better than that? One of the all-time greats. So, I hope everyone has a good holiday. See you Friday.”
To quote the fine folks over at “Pardon My Take,” that’s a football guy.
The Patriots are not among the six teams playing on Thanksgiving this year. They return to action Sunday, when they visit the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
