The New York Jets’ rotating door at quarterback reportedly will spin again Sunday.
The Jets plan to start second-year QB Bryce Petty against the Los Angeles Rams, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday morning. Chris Moore of WFAN New York was the first to report the news Saturday night.
Sunday would mark the first NFL start for Petty, whom the Jets picked in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Petty twice led Baylor to Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014 and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 after throwing for 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
Petty and rookie QB Christian Hackenberg had been riding the pine behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith in New York, but Fitzpatrick sprained his knee last weekend against the Miami Dolphins and was listed as a game-time decision entering Sunday. Smith is out for the season with a torn ACL, so with Fitzpatrick’s knee apparently still bothering him, the 3-6 Jets are turning to their third QB of the season.
Petty will have his work cut out for him in his first career start, as Los Angeles is allowing an average of 232 passing yards per game, ninth-fewest in the NFL.
