David Ross Atones For Defensive Mishaps With World Series Game 7 Homer

Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross had a fifth inning to forget in Game 7 of the World Series.

Ross entered the game to catch for Jon Lester when the veteran right-hander relieved starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks in the fifth frame Wednesday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Ross then fielded a weak ground ball down the third base line, but his throw to first went past the bag and into the stands, giving the Indians runners on second and third with two outs. A wild pitch that Ross couldn’t corral shortly after allowed both runners to score and trimmed Chicago’s lead to 5-3.

After Lester finally retired the side, Ross entered the top half of the sixth inning with a chance to make up for it at the plate, and that’s exactly what he did.

Ross belted a home run to center field, giving the Cubs a 6-3 lead. At 39 years old, he also became the oldest player to homer in Game 7 of a World Series.
