Colin Kaepernick has become pretty good at making enemies this season.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who has stirred up controversy by protesting during national anthems and refusing to vote in the general election, most recently landed in hot water by appearing to defend oppressive Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who died Friday at the age of 90.
Kaepernick’s comments made their way to Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso — whose father, Carlos, was born in Cuba — ahead of his team’s contest against the Niners on Sunday. Alonso had a huge game, recording 12 tackles and an interception and leveling Kaepernick on the game’s final play to preserve Miami’s 31-24 win.
After the game, Alonso ripped into Kaepernick for his “ignorant” comments about Castro and admitted they gave him a little extra motivation on the field.
“You two saw what happened in Cuba first-hand,” Alonso told his father and Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. “I didn’t. But I do have feelings about it. So there was some bad blood there for me with Kaepernick.”
Alonso said he didn’t talk any trash to the Niners quarterback but certainly had his sights set on No. 7.
“Usually, I just try to play my game,” Alonso said. “But I did try to hit him.”
Not coincidentally, Alonso also posted a picture on Instagram of his big hit on Kaepernick with the hashtag #cubalibre.
It’s been a nightmare season for San Francisco, which now is 1-10 after 10 consecutive losses, and Kaepernick isn’t exactly doing the team any favors.
