FOXBORO, Mass. — Donald Trump shocked New England on Monday night by telling his supporters in New Hampshire that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick had reached out to him to express their support.

There was a good chance Patriots players weren’t going to react to the letter Trump recited, which reportedly truly was penned by Belichick, but it was worth asking.

“Oh, I’m not getting into that,” special teams captain Matthew Slater said. “You know that.”

Slater was asked his general thoughts on the election.

“I’m going to refrain from commenting on any political matters at this time,” Slater said.

He does plan to vote, however.

“When we get out (Tuesday night) after practice,” Slater said. “My mom, my wife — I got a text (Tuesday) to make sure I vote. I think too many people, especially as an African-American in America, too many people had to sacrifice and die for me to have the right to vote, so I definitely have to exercise that.”
