Kennard Backman’s stay in New England was a brief one.

The Patriots on Tuesday released the 23-year-old tight end just three days after signing him to the practice squad.

Backman, a sixth-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2015, played in eight games for Green Bay as a rookie, including one playoff game. He has yet to catch his first NFL pass.

The Patriots now have three tight ends on their 53-man roster (Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett and Matt Lengel), one on injured reserve (Greg Scruggs) and zero on their practice squad.

New England visits the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
