The New England Patriots found themselves with an extra player on their practice squad Tuesday.

Rookie running back D.J. Foster, who was released Monday, cleared waivers and will join the practice squad, a source told NESN.com. The Patriots also re-signed tight end Kennard Backman to their practice squad, per Tuesday’s transaction wire.

The Patriots must either release Backman or one of the other nine players on their practice squad to complete the Foster signing. The Patriots went into Tuesday with running back Tyler Gaffney, fullback Glenn Gronkowski, wide receivers Devin Lucien and DeAndrew White, guards Chris Barker, Jamil Douglas and Chase Farris and linebackers Trevor Bates and Trevor O’Reilly on their practice squad.

Backman was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad earlier this month but only lasted three days.

Foster appeared in three games with the Patriots but was released when the team claimed defensive tackle Darius Kilgo from the Denver Broncos.
