Rex Ryan made the worst decision of his life Wednesday, but it had nothing to do with coaching football.
The Buffalo Bills head coach is a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, so for Game 7 of the World Series against the Indians, Ryan decided to gather up his coaches and make the trip to Cleveland to see it in person. And he had a great time sitting among the fans to watch the Cubs break their 108-year championship drought.
However, Ryan didn’t end up seeing the Cubs win because he and his colleagues did the unthinkable: They left during the rain delay with the game tied and heading into extra innings.
“I hate to admit it. I hate to admit it,” Ryan said, via CBSSports.com. “We had to (leave) because we had to get back to work, you know what I mean? So we had to get back to work, we have the rain delay, and I’m like, ‘You have to be kidding.'”
And things got worse from there. The rain delay ended up being just 17 minutes, so it was over before Ryan could even get out of Wrigley Field. Then, when they got to their bus, the radio didn’t work.
Ryan had to call his assistant head coach and twin brother Rob to hear the rest of the game.
“So I’m listening to my brother give us play-by-play,” Ryan said. “So, ‘Cubs win!’ So it was good.”
The Bills coaches still had a good time, though, because they wouldn’t have even been able to go if Buffalo wasn’t playing a “Monday Night Football” game in Week 9.
“If there was work to be done, then by gosh, I would have stayed and done the work, but it worked out perfect where I was able to get out and scrounge up some tickets late and get down there,” Ryan said. “So it was good. We had a little bus trip down there, so it was good.”
Still, we’d take missing out on some sleep over missing the end of a historic game.
