Richard Sherman heard Kaela Carpenter’s apology, but that doesn’t mean he accepts it.
The wife of Buffalo Bills kicker Dan Carpenter took to Twitter on Tuesday to suggest the Seattle Seahawks cornerback should be castrated for hitting her husband’s legs Monday during a field goal attempt in the Seahawks’ 31-25 win. Carpenter (sort of) apologized, saying it was meant to be a “lighthearted” joke, but Sherman wasn’t interested.
“It’s not surprising at all,” Sherman said of the tweet Wednesday, per ProFootballTalk. “This is a day and age where you’ve got Ku Klux Klan running around … you know, people say whatever they want, and there’s very little consequence. For her to say something like that and then have a B.S. apology like she did, I mean, it’s just the way of the world. I don’t let it bother me. It’s something that I’m very used to. It’s just the way people are — the way people were raised.”
For context, castration frequently was used as a punishment for black men during the Jim Crow era, so it’s not surprising that Sherman doesn’t care much for Carpenter’s apology. He wasn’t surprised she said it in the first place, either.
“It’s more disappointing than anything, but it’s also something that’s understandable,” Sherman said. “Ignorance has always been in the world. The core of this country has been built off slavery and people owning people. Anytime you understand that’s the core principles of the way a nation was built, then you’ve got to have some kind of, I guess, sympathy for it.”
