The Bryce Petty Experiment apparently lasted all of one week.
The New York Jets plan to start Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback against the New England Patriots coming out of their bye in Week 12, one game after they gave Petty his first career start against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10. Head coach Todd Bowles made the announcement Monday.
“He’s healthy,” Bowles said of Fitzpatrick in a press conference. “He’s been our starter. I don’t see anything that could change that right now.”
Fitzpatrick has started eight games for New York this season but missed that Week 10 game with a sprained knee. The veteran QB has had an abysmal year, throwing just eight touchdown passes and a league-high 13 interceptions while completing just 56.4 percent of his passes, the second-lowest in the NFL among qualified quarterbacks.
The Patriots faced the one player with a worse completion percentage Sunday in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
The quarterback position has been a disaster all season for the Jets, who lost Geno Smith to a torn ACL in Week 7 after he started in Fitzpatrick’s place. With New York at 3-7 entering Week 12, many have called for the Jets to give Petty the reins and allow the second-year QB to develop. But it appears Bowles and Co. still have faith in Fitzpatrick — despite what the Harvard product himself may think.
