It’s too bad Major League Baseball already handed out its 2016 Gold Glove Awards. Ryan Miller deserves one after the save he made Thursday night.
With time winding down in the third period and the Vancouver Canucks trailing the Detroit Red Wings by two goals, Miller headed to the bench for an extra skater. Before he could get there, however, the Canucks turned the puck over, trapping the veteran goalie in no-man’s land between the two faceoff circles.
The result was a wide-open net for Henrik Zetterberg, who took advantage of the golden opportunity by firing a shot from beyond the blue line. Then, Miller did this:
Miller’s acrobatic save prevented Zetterberg from notching his third point of the night, but it couldn’t rescue Vancouver, which lost 3-1 to fall to 5-9-1 on the season.
The Canucks have been in a tailspin since late October, taking just three points from their last 11 games (1-9-1) after beginning the regular season with four consecutive wins. They rank dead last in the NHL in goals per game (1.80) and second-to-last in goal differential (minus-16).
