Stephen A. Smith’s GOAT is different than Jim Kelly’s GOAT.
Kelly, who spent 11 seasons as quarterback of the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1996, recently said he believes Tom Brady is the greatest QB of all time. Smith made it clear on Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take” that he disagrees with Kelly, instead suggesting that Joe Montana remains the best ever.
Basically, Smith’s reluctance to anoint Brady the GOAT stems from the New England Patriots quarterback’s two Super Bowl losses to go along with his four rings. Montana, like Brady, has won four Super Bowls, but he’s a perfect 4-0 in the big game, and Smith prefers the unblemished record over reaching the Super Bowl two more times and losing.
In any event, it’s worth noting Brady’s career isn’t over. He isn’t eyeing retirement, he’s still the best quarterback in the NFL and the Patriots still look like perennial championship contenders.
So, Smith can call Montana the greatest of all time for now and at least have an argument. But at some point, Brady’s case for the GOAT could become irrefutable.
