Texas Reportedly Will Fire Coach Charlie Strong, Meet With Tom Herman

It appears the Charlie Strong era in Texas indeed will come to an end.

Texas officials will fire Strong in a meeting Saturday morning, multiple sources told HornsDigest.com’s Chip Brown on Friday night. Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel later confirmed the report.

The Longhorns’ focus then will turn to getting Houston coach Tom Herman to take over the football program, with a potential meeting happening Saturday at the earliest, according to HornsDigest.com, citing sources.

Strong’s reported firing hardly is surprising. In his three seasons in Texas, Strong never has coached a winning team and owns a 16-21 record. And it certainly didn’t help his case that his team finished the 2016 season with a 31-9 home loss to TCU.

Texas isn’t the only heavyweight program interested in Herman, though, as the coveted coach also has been linked to LSU.
